The research, development, and commercialization of a new technology such as a gas-fired heat pump is highly risky since it is difficult to predict its success in the market when there is no existing record of performance. The Gas Research Institute sponsored this research effort to obtain a detailed understanding of the associated risks and financial commitments necessary to develop and commercialize successfully new heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) technologies. The research effort was also directed to determine whether new heat-engine technologies can be successfully introduced into the marketplace without being bootstrapped by large military or space programs.
