Five National Science Foundation experiments are evaluated. The Federal Laboratory Assistance Program increased the rate of technological innovation, particularly among private innovators. The Innovation Centers Experiment exposed more than 2,000 students to instruction and/or experience in the entrepreneurial, invention, and innovation processes. Results of the University-Industry Cooperative Research Centers Experiment indicate that university-industry research is a viable concept. A study of Federal actions to accelerate utilization of civilian-oriented research and development (R&D) demonstrated that a formalized system can be developed to track the influences of incentive strategies on R&D projects and on the progress of the projects themselves. The Medical Instrumentation Experiment, though technically a failure, resulted in a way to accelerate the transfer of technology to medicine.
