The function of gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) in Florida lakes was investigated through: Short-term stocking experiments; in situ algal viability studies; and a simulation model of fish, plankton, and nutrient interactions. Fish were stocked at natural and elevated densities in enclosures filled with lake water. Phosphorus forms, chlorophyll a, algal productivity, and phytoplankton and zooplankton composition and abundance were monitored for eight and seven days, respectively.
