This appendix to a state - of - the - art report gives chronological summaries of technological developments and research studies related to building characteristics affecting accident safety, health, sanitation, and electrical safety. Summaries of events and research related to light begin with a description of the establishment of street lights in the 19th century and describe research on light intensities for school rooms and other structures, comparisons of natural and artificial light, and the effects of window glass on different types of light. Similar chronologies focus on ventilation, space and dimensions, potable water, plumbing fixtures, privacy, heating, basements and cellars, and glazing. Additional sections present findings related to plumbing; stairs; unregulated health hazards such as lead - based paint and asbestos; unregulated safety hazards including bathtubs and showers, windows, slip resistance, floor furnaces, and nonemergency exits. The development of building standards in England is also covered. Each summary includes a bibliographic citation. Figures are provided.
