The Health Library at the Kaiser-Permanente Medical Center, Oakland, California was established in 1969 as one part of a larger research project designed to incorporate health education and health maintenance into a comprehensive medical care program so as to improve the quality and delivery of health services, conserve physician time and reduce the costs of health care. The Health Library opened offering a multimedia collection of materials on health and medical subjects. A community service of the Kaiser-Permanente Medical Care Program, the Health Library was open, since its inception, to the public free of charge, as well as to Kaiser-Permanente Health Plan members and private patients. The health and medical information dispensed was and is screened for its medical accuracy by the physicians (or designees) at the Kaiser-Permanente Medical Center, Oakland. It encompasses materials (print, audiovisual) about the anatomy, physiology, biology, and psychology of the human being; the definition, achievement, and maintenance of a mental and physical state free of disease; and the definition, etiology, nature, and treatments of medical conditions and diseases.
