A statement is presented concerning priority setting and quantitative risk assessment performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The statement discusses past priority systems and why they were inadequate and the development of a new priority system, its objectives, and how it will aid NIOSH in performing its recommendation responsibilities on standards and research. In addition, the statement discusses how NIOSH is attempting to develop programs that look ahead to nonregulatory public health recommendations as well as future emerging areas of possible risk to workers.
