The increasing volume and variety of chemicals produced and traded throughout the world and an increasing awareness that chemicals have the potential to adversely affect human health and the environment have prompted national and international legislation requiring the testing of chemicals for possible health effects. At the same time, the crucial importance of studying populations exposed to various chemicals in industrial settings, domestic situations, and in the general environment has been emphasized, with the need for international collaboration in these studies recognized. In both the testing of individual chemical substances for the toxic properties and in the conducting of monitoring and epidemiological studies, the need exists both to harmonized methods and to agree on measurest to ensure the validity and integrity of any data used for the risk assessment of chemicals to human health and the environment.
