Integration of Seismic Design Principles into Preliminary Architectural Design

Results are presented of a survey taken to assess the sensitivity of practicing architects in the Eastern United States to seismic hazards and seismic design principles. It was found that the majority of Eastern architects had no experience in seismic design; however, 85 percent of those surveyed could identify vulnerable non-structural components and 88 percent could name geometric forms resistant to seismic forces. Only one-third of the respondents were aware of research done on the behavior of non-structural components during seismic activity. The efforts of two design teams in applying principles and strategies of seismic design to an actual design project in their offices are evaluated. Neither team found seismic criteria difficult to include. Major seismic codes are reviewed.
