Presented is an overview of potential impacts of underground mining on the surface environment and technology commonly used to control these impacts. Environmental problems which often accompany mining-related hydrologic disturbances and surface subsidence are described. Environmental concerns associated with surface activities of underground mining operations are also discussed. Technology aimed at controlling these environmental impacts is summarized.
