摘要

The Historic Structure Report for Grey Columns contains four primary data sections - administrative, history, landscape, and architectural. Prepared from 1977 through 1979, the report had a number of authors and contributors. Grey Columns is a significant architectural resource illustrative of the antebellum social, cultural, and economic history of the region. The report provides a brief history of the Varner family who built the house in 1857 and lived in it until they sold it to the National Park Service in 1975. The landscape data section gives a brief history of the area and provides drawings and maps of the layout of the grounds. The architectural data section gives a detailed analysis of all building elements, their appearance, and condition during the period 1920-1934, and their present appearance and condition. Recommendations for interior and exterior restoration and renovation techniques are included. This report is intended to serve as a guide for preservation as well as the continued maintenance of Grey Columns. The narrative of the report is supported by drawings, maps, illustrations and tables.
