摘要

The thesis describes the behavior with respect to the labor market of a firm that employs individual workers for an extended period of time, even though it routinely experiences a considerable amount of variation in its demand for labor. The paper contains a theoretical and empirical analysis of the effect of short run demand shifts on wages, hours worked, and the number of employees at work and on layoff. A comparison of the behavior of unionized employers in this environment with the practices of similar nonunion employers receives special attention. The theoretical analysis integrates some premises of the recent implicit contracting literature with aspects of older studies on the effects of firm specific human capital. The empirical analysis uses the Current Population Surveys from May of 1973-1975 to investigate the experiences of production workers in manufacturing during the peak-to-trough movement in aggregate demand that occurred over this period.
