Development of a model to predict the effectiveness of zooplankton grazing on phytoplankton requires knowledge of the factors which regulate the depth distribution of both communities. In this study, model lake systems (columns) were evaluated for their usefulness in the study of depth control of zooplankton populations. Simple linear regression and multiple regression analyses were employed to develop predictive models based on these studies under controlled laboratory conditions and in the field. Zooplankton depth regulation was further tested under continuous light to arctic lakes and ponds as well as in experimental columns. The influence of light and food concentration was examined with the experimental columns under controlled conditions. Food concentration strongly regulates the day-depth distribution of Daphnia populations.
