The importance of distinguishing between potential hazards (Dangers) and actual hazards (Risks) to the health of welders is discussed and emphasized, and a number of types of risk are enumerated. Speciation of particulate matter is proposed as a method of identifying dangerous material and dangerous processes and a specific example of in vivo studies of genotoxicity of welding fume is described.
