In the spring and summer of 1978, fifteen chestnut test plots that had been established between 1947 and 1955 were reexamined and all living chestnut trees critically evaluated. Ten percent of the 250 surviving hybrid chestnuts were blight resistant, and had the timber form and rapid growth of the American chestnut, Castanea dentata.
