摘要

A red tide encountered during the Wecoma, Leg I, JOINT II, cruise off Peru in March 1977, was discovered to be caused by Mesodinium rubrum. It is not a typical red tide organism, it is a ciliate and not an algae. However, because it is a photosynthesizer, because it is a nitrate reducer, and because it is a microorganism, it is a phytoplankter. Like many dinoflagellates it is photoactive, swimming to the sea surface in the day and dispersing throughout the water column at night. The report describes nitrate reductase activity which was measured on board the R/V Wecoma, and five types of experiments which were carried out on the cruise.
