摘要

Intended as a reference tool for individuals who must design fire duty schedules with pre-specified attributes, the Handbook contains a listing of over 2,000 schedules with properties common to most fire service schedules. The Handbook is based on previous work schedule design research performed by the Institute, and builds upon previous efforts by the International Association of Fire Fighters. Other information sources used in the preparation of the report include a survey of literature dealing with fire duty schedules and related topics; contact with fire professionals, operations researchers, and major public and private organizations connected with the fire service; personal visits to eleven fire departments; contact by letter or telephone with eight additional fire departments; and consultation with a project advisory board which included, among others, representatives of the International Association of Fire Fighters, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the International City Management Association, and the National Fire Protection Association.
