摘要

Vitamin A deficiency, often in association with protein deficiency, is a major nutritional problem among preschool children in many areas of the world. The most notable result of acute vitamin A deficiency is xerophthalmia, in which the surface of the cornea becomes dry and rough, ultimately causing permanent scarring or irreversible loss of sight. This report summarizes the latest findings about the absorption, metabolism, and function of vitamin A and suggests applications of this knowledge to improve vitamin A nutriture.
