A laboratory system was designed,constructed,and evaluated to explore the possibilities for recycling poultry manure wastewater. The system tested three volatile solids loading rates (1.076, 2.152,and 4.304kg/sq m/day) in combination with three hydraulic recirculation rates (0.5, 1.0,and 2.0 L/sq m/sec). An initial solids removal of about 9%,dry basis from the raw manure-sludge mixture was accomplished by the vibrating screen separator. This amounted to about 8.6% of the volatile solids at the daily loading rate of 2.152kg/sq m/day. Test results indicate that the highest recirculation rate in combination with volatile solids loading rates up to 2kg/sq m/day would provide an acceptable flushwater for removing manure from caged layer and broiler houses. The study has shown a definite potential for prototype facilities which would replace large lagoons and eliminate overflow problems.
