This report models some of the protocols used for controlling the physical links of a computer network. It considers a full duplex link with a bit-oriented line protocol,specifically IBM's Synchronous Data Link Control (SDLC). Two performance measures for the SDLC protocol were examined: (1) the maximum average effective data rate which can be achieved;and (2) the average time delay for a single message. A model of the occurrence of line errors and their effect on the relationship between achievable data rate is also developed. An evaluation for modelling a subset of the line protocol is used as the basis for a simulation from which the average time delay can be derived.
