A study was performed on the automatic selection of cutting conditions on multispindle machines. The mathematical relationships were formulated for simultaneous selection of machining parameters and a tool changing scheme. A package of computer programs has been prepared which permits the selection of cutting conditions for up to 20 working stations. This package can also be used for a small transfer line. Cutting conditions for a bigger transfer line can be found from this package if some minor changes are made in the programs. The examples are produced for eight spindle machines. The package permits turning, taper turning, and facing as machining operations. Results are obtained for the case of deterministic tool life and probabilistic tool life. In the latter case, each tool may be considered as obeying either normal or lognormal tool life distribution. If a reliability is given, the package will also generate the most economical scheduled tool change scheme. The computer program developed requires about 70K memory of 60 bit words on a CDC 6500 computer.
