Summaries,comments and rebuttals are presented on two manuscripts concerning mortality and industrial hygiene studies of a hard rock gold mine,performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Study results demonstrated significant risks of mortality from both malignant and non-malignant respiratory disease caused primarily by low level exposure to asbestiform mineral fibers. The study further indicated the need for reevaluating OSHA Standards on asbestos fiber exposure;improving present NIOSH sampling and analytical methods;and assessing potential adverse health effects on populations exposed to effluents containing trace concentrations of short-fiber non-commercial asbestiform minerals.
