Polyacrylamides have been shown to be effective flocculants resulting in increased efficiency in primary clarifiers in domestic waste treatment plants. The effectiveness of branched as opposed to linear anionic polyacrylamides at various hydrolysis and molecular weight levels has not been studied. The object of this investigation was to polymerize linear and branched polyacrylamide,fractionate these samples into different molecular weight portions, hydrolyze the resulting fractions to several anionic levels,and then study the flocculating effectiveness of the branched and linear polymer fractions for suspended solids and organic matter removal. Several conclusions were made from the study in regards to the molecular structure of polyacrylamide required for effective flocculation of dilute slurries. (1) A linear structure is more effective than a branched structure. (2) Increasing molecular weights increases the flocculation effectiveness of the polymer for both linear and branched polymers within the molecular weight range studied. (3) Slurry pH should not be acidic (< 6.5) for effective bridging to occur. (4) The polymer should be hydrolyzed in the range of 15-30% for optimum effectiveness.
