Methods of large-scale mining of the thick oil shale deposits in the deep central part of the Piceance Creek Basin of Northwestern Colorado are evaluated. Technical and economic data were obtained,preliminary layouts and designs were prepared,and pertinent operating features and cost data were analyzed and evaluated. The relative merits of each mining method are defined.
