The document reports the results of a study of 7major steel companies in the U.S. This project concentrates on the study of the large-scale systems involved in steel mills,the evaluation of the capabilities of hierarchical control systems versus the needs of the steel mills,and a thorough investigation of the details of the supervisory planning techniques. The results are to be used for mathematical modeling of the steel mills to develop optimum control systems for the processes involved in the mills. Chapter 1,contains an introduction and general details of the project. Chapter 2to 4report on three tasks of the project:integrated production planning and control of steel making facilities;analysis of optimization techniques and their applicability to the on-line hierarchical control of a steel mill complex;and an analysis of steel plant complex operational supervision practices.
