Lateral and Edge Stability of High-Strain Band Saws

Recently, North American machinery manufacturers have introduced band saws capable of exerting two or three times the conventional tensioning force. The merits of these high-strain levels in providing increased lateral and edge stability of thin blades are discussed. It is shown that lateral stability of a blade is determined primarily by the strain level and the free length of a blade. Edge stability is governed primarily by the blade thickness but it is affected also by changes in width, free length of blade, and the tensioning force. The calculations show that both lateral and edge stability can be increased significantly by the use of higher strain levels. (Author)
