Pilot-plant tests were conducted on a variety of dust collectors in order to demonstrate that dust collection technology is sufficiently advanced that the performance of various collection mechanisms on coal dust can be explained. The merits of the individual collectors was not determined. The procedures for determining results and the test results are set forth in this report. The collectors selected to provide a variety of collection mechanisms were operated according to manufacturers' recommendations. The report shows that, although dust collection mechanisms are available to clean the coal-laden air of a coal mine to 2 milligrams per cubic meter, no commercial dust collector is available which can meet the air quality specifications under the physical constraints of the mine environment.
