Further work concerning the heparinization of silicone rubber using gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane as a binding agent for the heparin moiety is described. Surfaces possessing greatly enhanced nonthrombogenic character were obtained. Aminopropyltriethoxysilane was the most effective aminoorganosilane studied. A number of experimental devices, shunts, tubing, etc., fabricated from silicone rubber, were heparinized by the methods developed. One of the more promising applications for such materials was in arterial-venous shunts used to produce chronic analgesia by the slow diffusion of an anesthetic through the silicone rubber. (Author)
