Detailed analyses of radar echoes, NSSL Betanetwork data and upper air soundings recorded on 3 April 1964 are made to investigate possible mechanisms of the movement of severe thunderstorms. From the analyses, it is apparent that the direction and speed of storm movement correlate directly with low-level inflow as described and characterized by the surface patterns of wind, pressure, temperature, and humidity, and also with storm rotation as indicated by the motion of small storm echo elements. Storm speed and direction to the right or left of the mean tropospheric wind can be explained as a result of combined effects of storm rotation, drag and propagation. Storm propagation is a result of a process of continuous intensification and subsequent displacement of convective activity to the side inflow side of the storm. (Author)
