摘要

The study of the feasibility of investment in the tourist and recreation industry is an increasingly frequent outgrowth of two important economic phenomena. The first of these is the impressive growth of leisure activities and businesses related to these activities in the United States over the past two decades. The second is the apparent presence of substantial recreation resources in many areas which have otherwise been passed over in the nation's great surge of industrial growth during the same period. It has been hypothesized that these two conditions may be placed in a single context to help create new employment and income opportunities in economically distressed areas. In the Technical Assistance application which led to this specific study, a group of private investors has held forth the prospect of expanded economic opportunity in a four-county area of East Tennessee, contingent upon successful development of a major resort complex on a part of the lands owned by the applicants on the shores of the TVA Norris Reservoir. The study, however, should be of interest to others in addition to the applicants. (Author)
