摘要

A simple, inexpensive appliance is presented which will supply sufficient drinking and cooking water for a family of five from brackish water. The appliance will operate on the principle of reverse osmosis and will require no power source. It will utilize only the water pressure already present in the household water system. Reverse osmosis is discussed and a proposed mechanism is outlined. The state of the art of cellulose acetate membrane technology is presented. The method of hand casting membranes onto a glass plate is reviewed and a newly developed continuous membrane casting machine is presented. A major improvement is recognized in the ability to cast membranes onto a tough porous polyester backing. The backing provides strength as well as easy identification of the 'good side' of the cellulose acetate membrane. A test cell has been constructed and a testing system developed. The economic feasibility of using low pressure (50 psig) for reverse osmosis desalination of brackish water has been established by the testing program. A section is devoted to Dr. S. Sourirajan's correlations which were developed to predict the performance of porous cellulose acetate membranes. The design of a proposed reverse osmosis cell to produce 5 gallons of potable water per day is presented. A prototype of this cell has been constructed and partially tested. Preliminary test results indicate that the prototype and polyester backed membranes can be combined in an economically feasible appliance. (Author)
