One objective of the document was to generate a unified and scientific approach to improving the conning efficiency. Section 1.0 is a review of the traditional uses of sound and hearing in the conning function against the framework and concepts of the Human Factors Study of the Volume I feasibility study. Section 2.0 introduces the concepts of 'cue source' and 'cue measure', and applies these concepts to evaluating the present conning data sources and potential improvements possible through H-LAD and other devices. Section 3.0 discusses the merits of having redundant cue sources in forming conning decisions and defines the optimal usage of such data. Section 4.0 compares man and machine in his capacity to detect sound signals and to derive the necessary data from the signals; tentative conclusions are given for the dichotomy of functions to be performed by the conning officer and H-LAD. Appendix A suggests further improvements in the conning function that might result through use of improved cue sources and the application of other disciplines. (Author)
