摘要

The report presents part of the results of a continuing study of soil-lime stabilization. In order to study the factors which influence the stabilization process, a number of properties were determined for 22 horizons of 11 carefully selected Illinois soils, including plasticity, organic matter, cation exchange capacity, amounts of individual cations and pH. Additional tests were performed on soil-lime mixtures for plasticity, shrinkage limit and unconfined congressive strength. Comparison of the data indicated that lime greatly modifies soil plasticity, 3 percent rendering most of the soils non-plastic and 5 percent rendering all non-plastic. Organic matter in the A horizons did not interfere with lime's effect on plasticity, but almost completely inhibited strength development. The shrinkage limit was markedly increased by lime in all cases, some soils becoming non-cohesive. Strength increase was not directly related to clay content. Apparently the least modest clay content of all the soils was sufficient to provide for full reaction of all of the lime added, additional clay beyond this not contributing to generation of cementory products. The ratio of calcium to magnesium and the presence of sodium in the exchange complex of the clay may slightly influence strength development. Reactivity with lime, as indicated by strength development, seems also to increase significantly as the soils become progressively more poorly drained. (Author)
