Aerotitis media specimens were examined for cytologic and certain biochemical constituents. The findings were compared with various categories of middle ear effusions of nonbarotraumatic origin and with blood serum. The chemical, physical, and microscopic properties of aerotitis media effusions most closely resemble the serous category of middle ear effusions.nIt was concluded that aerotitis media effusions probably have their origin in blood serum and that the negative pressure which occurs in the middle ear upon descent from altitude causes vascular changes sufficient to allow various blood components to enter the tympanic cavity. No evidence of inflammation was found.
