A Transportation Corps requirement was established for highly versa¬tile locomotives of suitable power, speed, and flexibility for light-duty switching and road service in both domestic and foreign theaters of operation. The design features of these locomotives should include adaptability to rail gages of 36 to 66 inches, ability to operate in a wide range of climatic conditions, suitability for multiple-unit oper¬ation with all other U. S. military foreign-type diesel-electric loco¬motives, provision for various foreign-type coupling arrangements, suitability for operation in areas with restrictive clearances and/or severe axle-load limitations, provision for installation of vacuum brake equipment, and standardization to reduce spare parts require¬ments.
