A new approach to the synthesis of tetra-O-methyl-D-glucaric acid has been made.nFrom the lactone of D-glucaric acid the di-p-toluidide of D-glucaric acid, the di-p-hydroxyanilide of D-glucaric acid, the tetra-O-acetyl-di-p-toluidide of D-gluceric acid, and the hexa-O-ecetyl-di-p-hydroxyanillde of D-glucaric acid have been prepared. These com¬pounds have not been described in the literature. Methylation studies on tetra-O-ecetyl-di-p-toluidide of D-glucaric acid have been carried out. A product which is a water insoluble syrup has been obtained. This syrup has been treated with sodium hydroxide in ethylene glycol and a salt has been isolated which was acidified with hydrocholoric acid and a water soluble syrup was obtained.nThe results of this work indicate that tetra-O-methyl D-glucaric acid can be prepared by the approach described.
