摘要

The experiment was arranged to study the effects of a prolonged tone (about 12 minutes in duration) of 1000 cycles at 90 db upon the background of muscular tension, upon the muscular action of instructed responses, and upon their response time.nThe principal results were:n1.tThe total background of muscular activity declines through the sitting in both noise and quiet.n2.tIn quiet the right (responding) arm fails to participate in this decline. In noise it shows a decline, but not so great as the left.n3. When noise is present, the general muscular activity is increased in both arms at first. There are significant individual differences in this effect.n4. In the left arm this noise effect does not diminish; according to the interpretation given, it persists in the right, also, though it is masked there by the behavior of the right arm during quiet, the usual base of comparison.n5. Patterns of flexion and extension are quite similar and extend to all four locations.n6. The previous finding is confirmed that extension requires a much greater muscular action than flexion at this joint.n7. There is a tendency for (he response size to increase as the background level falls, so as to keep the final tension level fairly constant.n8. Response time is shorter for flexion than for extension under quiet conditions.n9. Response time shortens as the sitting progresses.n10. During noise the response time is length¬ened, more for flexion than for extension.n11. It is concluded that there are three sorts of antecedent tension in the experiment; a fading pattern produced by the situation as a whole, a similar but confiding pattern produced by the noise and a different pattern residual from the series of instructed responses.n12. The presence of an unfavorable antecedent response pattern may explain the general and differential retardation of response during noise, the same antecedent producing differential effects because of the different size and rate of the two responses.
