Absorption and Transmission of Electromagnetic Waves Phase B: Diffraction of Electromagnetic Waves at a Rectonguar Aperture in a Completely Conducting Plane Screen
The investigation of the diffraction of plane electro¬magnetic waves by rectangular and square apertures has been completed. The field distribution along the two lines of symmetry of a square aperture of the side length 4 λ was calculated approximately and measured with a wave length of 3.2 cm. For comparison also the field within slits of infinite length and of 4 λ and 6 λ widths was calculated.nThe diffraction problem of the perfectly conducting semi-infinite sheet was treated extensively. This investigation is a first step of our further studies on the diffraction phenomena at absorbing screens which shall be started with the geometri¬cally simple case of a "black" semi-infinite sheet. For the case of infinite conductivity from Sommerfeld's exact solution of the problem the fields within the plane of the screen were calculated and numerically evaluated. The well known vectorial formulae of Kirchhoff for perfectly reflecting screens were simplified to two-dimensional problems and applied to the semi-infinite sheet. The two resulting approximations were compared with the results of the exact solution.
