摘要

The technical bulletin discusses chronic nonspecific ulcerative colitis, a disease of unknown etiology. The essential pathological lesion is an ulcerative process in the colon, causing bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain. Secondary effects such as prolonged fever, anemia, malnutrition, and avitaminosis contribute to the seriousness of the disease. It is characteristically remittent and chronic in its clinical course. Difficulties stand in the way of clinical investigation of the disease, but recent studies of the possible etiologic role of lysozyme provide encouraging evidence of progress. Medical treatment is only partially satisfactory. It consists largely in controlling symptoms and correcting secondary deficiencies since none of the chemotherapeutic agents or antibiotics has proved to be specific. In the considerable fraction of patients who in spite of medical treatment are reduced to a state of chronic invalidism, surgical treatment, consisting in the main of ileostomy and subsequent colectomy, is of great benefit.
