The I.G. Farbenindustrie manufactured quite large quantities of synthetic tanning assistants and tanning agents both before and during the wax. These products were for the most part exceedingly complex in chemical composition but were mainly sulphonated derivatives of phenol (in the generic sense; and/or aromatic hydrocarbon-formaldehyde conden-sates, sometimes with the addition of sulphite cellulose liquor to the reactants. Process data has been provided for the more complex and important syntans together with an outline of the composition of simpler or less important products. Some information on the properties of these products has been given.nFat substitutes for the leather industry and agents for impreg¬nating and waterproofing leather were also made by the I. G. and the composition or manufacture of these has been described.nProduction figures for many of the products have been provided.
