摘要

This volume of collective biography is one of collaborative scholarship by twenty-one different historians, designed to provide a historical perspective on a specific issue of current interest to the United States Navy and the Naval War College: operational and strategic leadership. Throughout the 125 years of its existence, the Naval War College has developed the leadership abilities of the officers attending its courses and prepared them for positions of high command dealing with strategic and operational issues. To highlight this, on 1 October 2007 Naval War College President Rear Admiral Jacob Shuford formally established within the college a section specifically designed to deal with this topic: The College of Operational and Strategic Leadership (COSL). This new organization joined five other colleges already established within the Naval War College. These are the College of Naval Warfare and senior-level U.S. students; the College of Naval Command and Staff for intermediate-level U.S. students; the Naval Command College for senior-level international officers; the Naval Staff College for intermediate-level international officers; and the College of Distance Education for off-campus courses, correspondence courses, and internet-based courses.
