Domestic violence is the number one health problem and the leading cause of death by homicide for women in the United States. Children who often see much more than their parents realize, are deeply hurt and often permanently scarred if they don't get the help they need. Children, especially boys, who witness domestic violence are more likely to grow up to be severely violent abusers themselves. As a victim of domestic violence, you must recognize that you and your family are likely in more danger than you might think. Unfortunately, violence can suddenly erupt into life threatening or lethal proportions. Your safety is a priority to us, and we hope you take the time to teach yourself and your children about the dangers of domestic violence. Safety planning may save your life. The purpose of this handbook is to help you to better understand how domestic violence affects you and your children and to give you tools to help yourself and prevent further injury or even death.
