In 2005, the Poison Control Centre (PCC) of Milan handled 25,307 cases of human exposure to chemical agents (nonpharmaceuticals), occurred in different Italian regions. The PCC was contacted by health care facilities in 60% of the cases and by the general public in 33%. On the average, the call volume peaked at 12 a.m and 9 p.m. Children younger than 6 years were involved in 47% of cases. Male and female individuals accounted for 52% and 44% of cases, respectively. About 87% of exposures occurred at home and 5% in the workplace. Reason for exposure was unintentional for about 89% of cases, mainly related to uncontrolled access to the agent (50%), pouring from the original container to another (8%), food poisoning (6%). Intentional circumstances were reported for 8% of cases and were mainly due to suicide attempt (6%). Clinical effects possibly related to exposure were coded in 49% of cases, while at least one treatment was required for 66%. The most common categories of chemicals involved in human exposures were: cleaning substances (household) (31%), pesticides (9%), cosmetics/personal care products (9%), foreign bodies (9%). This report provides a preliminary characterization of human exposures to nonpharmaceutical chemical agents in Italy and highlighted the potential of a national surveillance system based on the information reported by the PCCs.
