The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has shown that Saginaw River sediments, riverbank soils, and fish contain elevated amounts of dioxin-like chemicals (DLCs). The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) has documented fish consumption patterns of people eating fish from the Saginaw River and surrounding waters. Based on reported consumption of fish from the Saginaw River and associated tributaries, MDCH finds that many of the current consumption patterns of Saginaw River fish are a Public Health Hazard. This health consultation evaluates the risk to human health from exposure to dioxin-like chemicals (DLC) found in Saginaw River fish, flood plain soils, and sediments.
