摘要

The awareness that moderate motion is an important aid, both for prevention and rehabilitation care, led in the past to the interest in the design and construction of simple and wearable systems for the step counting, which is an important index of motion activity. One of the most diffused wearable systems, designed for this purpose, is the so called pedometer. The accuracy of commercial pedometers has been tested in literature and several limits have been found in many commercial systems in the case of healthy subjects. Furthermore it was also demonstrated that these systems can be confused in the case of subjects with pathologies affecting unbalance, such as the Parkinson's disease. A new wearable system for the step counting has been designed and constructed as it is described in this document. This system is based on a wearable device with a force sensing resistor and a band; it is affixed at the calf gastrocnemius level for the monitoring of the muscular expansion correlated to the gait. The system has been tested against a gold standard by Biometrics (UK) and three healthy subjects. The results obtained over an assessment of 500 steps performed by each subject with two different gait instructions (normal and fast) showed a mean error lower that 0.5%. The statistical confidence of results was also high (p 0.04) as proved by ANOVA (Analysis of variance).
