Lake and watershed restoration activities were completed during 1995 and 1996. Water samples were taken at three sites in Lake Ahquabi and comparison of water quality were made, pre and post restoration. Chlorophyll a levels, total suspended solids, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus were all lowered as the result of watershed and lake restoration efforts; additionally, these lowered levels have been maintained for 10 years, preventing water quality from deteriorating to pre restoration levels. Secchi disk transparencies were significantly improved as the result of improvements made in the watershed and lake basin. The biomass of largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie and channel catfish increased by several orders of magnitude. We also documented a similar increase in the density and biomass of angler acceptable fish following improvements made to the lake and watershed. This comprehensive restoration effort also eliminated the large biomass of common carp and gizzard shad from the lake and these species have not re-entered the fishery. As one would expect, angler catch and harvest of fish also increased as the fish community improved. Catch and harvest of fish were among the best observed for Iowa lakes, up to 2.62 f/hr in 1997 with a mean catch rate of 2.31 f/hr over the entire study.
