The National Nursing Centers Consortium's 2004 Annual Conference aimed to bring together health care professionals from across the country for three days to consider the best approaches to eliminating health disparities and producing strong health outcomes through research, policy, and practice. Conference participants came from 27 states throughout the country as well as Canada, and represent health care professionals, nurse academics and practitioners, and federal level health care representatives. Including NNCC staff and speakers, approximately 200 people participated. Breakout and general sessions focused on the broad issues impacting nurse-managed health centers such as data collection, funding streams, access to services, and best practices for health outcomes, among other issues. Best practice sessions addressed the primary health issues these centers face such as chronic conditions like diabetes, asthma, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Current research and opportunities for further research on the utilization of health services and cost efficiencies were discussed. Panels provided seasoned perspective on the challenges facing nurse-managed health centers. The conference also explored effective ways to implement clinical practice guidelines for chronic diseases and health disparities like asthma and diabetes to ensure better quality of care. Evaluation results demonstrated that attendees were extremely pleased with the knowledge gained and networking opportunities that the conference offered. Comments were extremely positive. Suggestions focused on administrative and organizational aspects, as well as providing issue-focused sessions at next year's conference.
