摘要

The purpose of the above-named conference was five-fold: (1) expand the findings from the institute of Medicine (IOM) report, improving Palliative Care for Cancer, to hospice and palliative care professionals$ (2) present effective models of palliative care being utilized throughout the nation$ (3) enhance the dissemination of effective protocols as well as interdisciplinary collaboration that have resulted from the formation of the Community-State Partnerships to improve End-of-Life Care$ (4) foster increased interdisciplinary care of dying patients and their families$ and (5) promote increased access to interdisciplinary palliative care through attention to cultural barriers. Conference planners emphasized that good palliative care must be available in all settings, not just hospice and palliative care units. Speakers had experience in various settings and training in interdisciplinary palliative care. Emphasis was placed on cultural diversity among speakers. The conference included two plenary sessions and six concurrent sessions. Joanne Lynn, M.D., addressed the findings of IOM report. Richard Payne, M.D., spoke on cultural barriers to excellent palliative care. Break-out sessions addressed palliative care for patients in intensive care, emergency department, pediatrics and long term care, and those who are immuno-compromised for whom aggressive treatment was being discontinued.
