摘要

Post-season harvest surveys are conducted to collect information from hunters about the number of animals harvested, where they hunted, and the number of trips that they took during a hunting season. This information is then used by wildlife managers in establishing and monitoring harvest regulations. During this study, methods of small area estimation were explored and developed to produce more reasonable estimates than what can be done using traditional statistical approaches. Hierarchical Bayesian models were developed and explored to determine if these procedures would provide an alternative approach. Both spatial (He and Sun 2000) and non-spatial (He and Sun 1998) models were developed in this process. Spatial autocorrelation proved extremely beneficial in providing small area estimates from a post-season turkey harvest survey when data were collected using simple random sampling techniques (Woodard et al. 1999).
