This study was designed to determine how the various buffers affected water quality under a variety of runoff conditions. The wooded buffers were more effective in reducing runoff volume and as a result reduced all constituents proportionately. The grassed buffers were much more effective in sediment retention when the width was doubled. The landscaped buffers were just as effective as the grass buffers in reducing sediment loads. The authors expected the pesticide concentrations to be reduced after passing through the landscaped buffer but this was not evident. However, the one most commonly detected pesticide, metolachlor, was significantly reduced in total amounts leaving the landscaped buffer compared to the grass only buffer.
