Washington's urban and rural communities are served by an airport system that provides mobility to Washingtons citizens, visitors and other traveling public. The strong performance by Washingtons airports has been integral in the development and sustaining of Washington States role in international trade for the nation. The economic benefits of major airports are well known and acknowledged; less well known is the benefit to the state and rural communities provided by rural airports. This report identifies the wide range of benefits that rural communities receive because they have an airport. The objectives are to describe the economic environment within which rural communities are operating; understand why flights are made to understand how the community is served by aviation related and other activities, which use rural airports; identify the benefits communities receive and how integrated rural airports are into the fabric of the community; investigate strategies for decision makers concerned about the vitality of rural airports; and identify several emerging technologies or trends that may impact the role of airports in the future.
